Richard “Dick” Samstag, age 83, of Irvine, CA, passed away on May 20, 2018, following a nearly year-long battle with multiple health issues. He is now free from pain and in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father. He was preceded in death by his first-born daughter, Barbara Light, his stepson, Robert Murphy, and his older brother, Bernard Samstag. He is survived by his wife, Jennie Samstag, of Irvine, CA, her son, Wayne (Laura) Murphy of Corona, CA and their family, his six remaining children and their families, David (Joyce) Samstag of Irvine, CA, Debbie (Dennis) Snow of Orlando, FL, Kathy (Ken) Tomlinson of Los Angeles, CA, Marty (Yvette) Samstag of Corona, CA, Joe Samstag of Phelan, CA, Dan (Janell) Samstag of Woodstock, GA, plus 14 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. He also has three remaining siblings, Bill (Judy) Samstag, Mary (Bruce) Cahill and Liz (Claude) Samstag and their families. Dick was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on March 29, 1935, and was raised by devout Catholic parents – Emma & Anthony Samstag. After grade school he spent a few years in a Catholic monastery, training to be a Brother of St. Francis. He soon realized that wasn’t the life for him and decided to join the Navy where he served as a Radioman from 1953 – 1957. Then he attended Penn State Institute. Dick worked at various companies throughout his career as a computer field engineer and was promoted up to senior management. He earned his MBA from LaVerne University at the age of 56. He retired from McDonald Douglas/Boeing Corp. in 1997.During his retirement, Dick continued to live a very active life. A sailor at heart, he spent many years aboard his sailboat that he kept docked in Dana Point Harbor. He was an avid tennis player, remote control plane/boat enthusiast, a ham radio operator, and an astronomer. Together with his wife, they volunteered in their community by feeding the homeless, as well as, being active members of many programs at The Groves, the retirement community where they have lived for the past 20 years. And, he worked with both IDEC and CERT which are Community Service Organizations. He was well respected by all who knew him as he was always available to lend a helping hand to those in need.Dick was a member of the Good Shepard Lutheran Church of Irvine.
