Patrick Allen Long, 75, a longtime resident of Orange County, California, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2018, surrounded by his beloved wife and family. Born in Springfield, Illinois to Chester and Mary Ellen Long, he was raised in Phoenix, Arizona from the age of 12. He attended Brophy College Preparatory, an all-male Jesuit high school in Phoenix, where he was a multi-sport athlete. In 1960 he was selected to the All State Arizona high school football team. His football prowess gained him an athletic scholarship to the University of San Diego, where he continued to play football until the program was unexpectedly discontinued. He then transferred and ultimately graduated from San Diego State University. Upon graduation, he become employed with Aetna Casualty & Surety. While maintaining full time employment with Aetna, Pat enrolled in the evening law school program at Southwestern School of Law, where he graduated in 1970. Pat’s law career began as an Associate, with Veatch Carlson Dorsey and Quimbly (1971-75). He then worked and became an Equity Partner at Chase Rotchford Drukker & Bogust (1975-89). In 1989 he became the Founding Partner of Long & Delis, where he worked until the time of his passing. After having completed approximately 100 jury trials and appellate matters, Pat turned his attention to dispute resolution, when he joined the neutral panel of mediators at Judicate West. Pat’s love of the law resulted in his monumental contributions to the legal community. He was a past President of multiple regional and national law organizations, including the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel (1991) and Defense Research Institute (2006). He served as both the Editor and Columnist of Verdict Magazine for 15 years (1993-2008), and continued in his capacity as the magazine’s chief Columnist, until the time of his passing. He was a Faculty Member of both the ABOTA Masters in Trial and IADC Trial Academy programs. His was selected as a “Super Lawyer” by Los Angeles Magazine for 11 consecutive years. Despite his busy professional life, Pat found time to pursue his many other passions including literature, music, movies, writing, flying airplanes, and riding motorcycles. His love of athletics inspired him to continue playing lacrosse, rugby, and ice hockey well into adulthood. He was a devout Catholic and proud Irishman. Pat is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Casey Long (McKillip), his sister Mary Kay Rawlins (Long), his son T. Patrick Long and daughters Megan Kathleen Casani (Long) and Molly Maureen Tepstein (Long), daughter-in-law Leslie Long (Wallen), son-in-law Jason Casani, son-in-law Dan Tepstein and grandchildren Patrick, Jack, Charlie and Henry Casani; Tommy and Brendan Long, and Brady and Shea Tepstein. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother William “Bill” Long. A memorial mass service will be held at Saint Cecelia Catholic Church at noon on January 27, 2018, followed by a reception.
