Maria Josefina de Castro Alonso

Maria Josefina Alonso, affectionately known as “Joji”, a cherished wife, loving mother and dedicated physician, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on August 28, 1941, in Sorsogon, Bicol, a province of The Philippines, Joji was a pillar of warmth and compassion to her family and the greater community.

Board Certified in pediatrics, Dr. Joji’s life was a testament to her deep-rooted values and dedication to service. After graduating from medical school in 1966, she embarked on a remarkable career as a pediatrician, providing care to thousands of children with unparalleled kindness and expertise. Her ability to heal and comfort made her not only a doctor but a confidant to countless families who entrusted her with the care of their children.

In 1968, she married the love of her life, Adolfo “Gerry” Alonso, in Baltimore, Maryland. Together they built a life full of love, laughter, and mutual respect, sharing practices and traveling the world. Her devotion to her family was unwavering, and she found tremendous joy in nurturing her three sons, John Michael, James Joseph, and Jason Paul.  

Always with Gerry by her side, Joji was a tango enthusiast to the highest degree.  Frequently gracing the floors of milongas throughout the east coast, the perfectly paired Alonso couple spent their golden years immersed in the passionate dance.  

A truly remarkable soul has left the world with Dr. Joji’s passing, but her spirit of love and light will doubtlessly remain with so many.
