Margaret Hunter Gritton passed away peacefully on October 20th, 2024 at
the age of 89, after suffering a fall and living with dementia.
Margaret Hunter was born February 4th, 1935, in Provo, Utah, to Milton
R. Hunter (of the First Council of Seventy in the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints) and Ferne Gardner Hunter. She was the second of
six children: Reed, Margaret, Lois Anne, Linda, Allison, and Michael.
Margaret grew up in Logan and Salt Lake City, taking on the role of
older sister to her younger siblings. She earned a bachelor's degree
with a dual major in Home Economics and Clothing and Textiles from
Brigham Young University, working at ZCMI (Zion's Cooperative Mercantile
Institution – the local department store) while she was in college.
She then went on to Oregon State University where she earned a master's
degree in Clothing and Textiles. There she met her husband, George
Vance Gritton, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on March
22nd, 1962.
Margaret taught Clothing in many colleges including Fort Hays State in
Kansas, Oregon State University, Cal State Long Beach, and Fullerton
College. She was chairman of the Home Economics department at Chapman
College (now Chapman University). She started the Home Economics
department at Saddleback College and oversaw the development of the
Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising program, teaching and serving
as department chairman until she retired.
Margaret is the mother of three children: Gregory (Cindy), James
(Julie), and Valerie Murray (Walter).
Margaret is survived by her sisters Lois Anne McGill (Patrick) and
Allison Koritz (Charles), brother Michael Hunter, sister-in-law Mary Ann
Hunter, as well as her children, ten grandchildren, and one
great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Vance,
brother Reed, and sister Linda Adams.
Her funeral will take place at 10:00am on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024,
at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Woodbridge 2nd ward,
23 Lake Road, Irvine, California 92604, with a viewing at 9:00am. She
will be buried at El Toro Memorial Park.
