Hyon was born on July 5, 1944 to Chang Nak Woo and Chong Cha Choi in South Korea.
Hyon was married to Kenneth B. Burtch and went on to have a daughter, Jean Margaret Burtch Ha whom she is married to James Nhat Ha, and has two sons with, John Joseph Ha and Jefferson James Ha.
Hyon was predeceased by Hyon Ja Woo. She is survived by Hyon Hui Woo and Kenny Chong Kyu Woo
