Guido Reinhard

September 15, 1940 — May 12, 2018

A fifty-year resident of North Tustin, Guido passed away at Sunridge Assisted Living in the community of Regents Point, Irvine where he had been living since March. He had been fighting prostate cancer for 18 years and was more recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. But his resolve not to let his illnesses define him showed the determined spirit which he displayed in forging his path in his adopted country of the United States. Guido was born in Bad Nauheim, Germany, and in 1962 he traveled on the SS Bremen to live with an uncle in Monterey. He attended and subsequently graduated with an AA degree from Monterey Peninsula College and went on to the University of California at Berkeley where he earned his undergraduate degree in German. While there he met his future and now wife of 50 years Martha Rees Reinhard while both were singing in the university chorus. Guido obtained a Masters Degree in German at San Francisco State University and finally a secondary teaching credential at Berkeley. He and Martha moved to Orange County in 1967 and Guido began a 32-year teaching career at Fountain Valley High School. He and a childhood friend from Bad Nauheim who taught English there arranged exchanges between their students through the German American Partnership Program. After retiring from teaching, Guido and Martha bought a pistachio orchard in Paso Robles and Guido became a farmer nurturing his pistachio trees the way he always nurtured his family and his students. During this time, he and Martha could be seen in several local farmers markets selling their pistachios. In addition to his wife Martha, Guido will be missed his two sons, Eric of Campbell, California and his wife Kelley and their two children Kate (15) and Jack (12). He also leaves a son Gregory of Ladera Ranch, California and his wife Shannon and their two children Brooke (8) and Logan (5). Also surviving is a brother Lothar of Walldorf, Germany and his wife Renate. Private burial will be held in Monterey, California with a celebration of his life to be announced at a later date.
