Dr. Rani Hemalatha Gunawardana passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026, in California, surrounded by her loving family. She was 80 years old.

Born on February 27, 1946, in Thelwatta in Sri Lanka’s Galle District, Rani was an exceptionally bright and dedicated student from an early age. She attended Sanghamitta College and Mahinda College before entering the University of Peradeniya, where she earned her MBBS degree and began a distinguished career in medicine. She later completed her specialization in Anaesthesiology in the United Kingdom.

For more than three decades, Dr. Gunawardana served as a physician, educator, researcher, and mentor. She was the first Professor of Anaesthesiology at the University of Peradeniya and helped establish and lead the Department of Anaesthesiology as its founding Chair, shaping the training of future generations of physicians and specialists throughout Sri Lanka. Throughout her career, she trained generations of medical students and anesthesiology specialists, published extensively in the fields of anaesthesiology and critical care, and received numerous professional honors and awards, including a Presidential Award for Scientific Research in Medical Sciences. She was also recognized for her volunteer medical service in military hospitals and camps during Sri Lanka’s civil conflict, reflecting her deep commitment to caring for those in need. She was deeply devoted to helping patients and advancing medical education, and she took great pride in developing future physicians.

In 1970, she married Professor R. P. Gunawardane. Together they built a life grounded in mutual respect, partnership, and shared dedication to education and service. They worked side by side at the University of Peradeniya for many years, supporting one another through every stage of their lives and careers.

To her daughters, Ruwanthi and Nilanthi, she was a loving and devoted mother who constantly encouraged them to strive for excellence, treat others with kindness, and contribute to the well-being of their communities. She led by example, demonstrating that achievement and compassion could go hand in hand. One of her greatest joys was helping others, and she instilled that value in her family from an early age. Her daughters fondly remember celebrating birthdays at schools for deaf and blind children in Kandy, where she taught them the importance of sharing with those less fortunate.

Nothing brought Rani greater happiness than her family, especially her grandchildren, Suvini and Pasan. She delighted in spending time with them, listening to their stories, preparing their favorite meals, and showering them with love. No matter the occasion, she made sure everyone’s favorite foods were on the table. Her home was always a place of warmth, generosity, and welcome.

Rani also shared a special bond with her younger sister, Lalitha Ariyasinghe. Their close relationship endured throughout their lives, providing one another with love, support, and companionship through life’s joys and challenges. In later years, Rani was especially happy that Lalitha was also living in California, allowing the sisters to spend more time together and remain closely connected to one another and their families. She was equally devoted to her nieces and nephews, taking a genuine interest in their lives, celebrating their accomplishments, and maintaining close relationships across generations.

Those who knew Dr. Gunawardana remember her as a brilliant physician, an exceptional teacher, and a woman of remarkable resilience and strength. She held herself and others to high standards, yet she was guided by a deeply compassionate heart. Former students, colleagues, patients, friends, and family often speak of the countless ways she helped others, frequently going out of her way to provide support, guidance, and encouragement. Her ability to explain complex concepts with clarity, mentor young physicians, and inspire confidence in those around her left a lasting impression on generations of students and colleagues.

After moving to the United States in 2001, she lived in Boston and Chicago before settling in California in 2014. In her later years, her greatest joy remained spending time with her loved ones and watching her grandchildren grow. Throughout her life, she believed that knowledge carried a responsibility to serve others, and she lived that principle every day.

Her life was defined by knowledge, compassion, service, and generosity. She leaves behind a legacy that lives on through her family, her students, her patients, and the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever appreciated.

Dr. Gunawardana is survived by her beloved husband, Professor R. P. Gunawardane; her loving daughters, Ruwanthi and Nilanthi; her sons-in-law, Jason and Panduka; her cherished grandchildren, Suvini and Pasan; her beloved sister, Lalitha Ariyasinghe; her brother-in-law, Pulatisi Guruge; and many extended family members, friends, colleagues, students, and patients whose lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Dr. Rani Gunawardana’s memory to charitable organizations in Sri Lanka that support children's health, education, or medical care.
